Why You Can't Just Use a Birthdate Table
Your Day Master is determined by the Heavenly Stem of your birth day in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. The most common misunderstanding is that this is a simple lookup: find your birthday on a chart, read your stem. It isn't. The Chinese calendrical system runs on a completely different structure than the Gregorian calendar, and the mapping between them has several layers of complexity.
Getting your Day Master wrong is a significant problem. Every subsequent interpretation of your chart is built on an incorrect foundation. The accuracy of your reading depends entirely on the precision of the calculation.
The Day Master is determined by the Chinese lunisolar calendar, not the Gregorian one. A simple birthday lookup without calendar conversion will produce an incorrect result for most people.
The Three-Layer Calculation
Accurate Day Master calculation requires three distinct steps, each of which has historically required specialised knowledge.
Step 1: Convert to the Chinese Lunisolar Calendar
The Chinese lunisolar calendar does not align with the Gregorian calendar in a simple or consistent way. Each Chinese month begins and ends on different Gregorian dates each year, based on the movements of the moon and astronomical observations. A Gregorian date of March 15 might fall in the first Chinese month, the second, or even the previous year's last month depending on which year you're looking at.
This conversion also means that the Chinese new year varies by several weeks each year. It is not January 1. In Korean Saju, the year changeover point is the Solar Term Ipchun (立春, Start of Spring), which usually falls around February 4. This means that someone born on January 20, 1990, is counted as a 1989 person in Saju, not a 1990 person.
Step 2: Apply Solar Term Corrections
Korean Saju runs on solar terms (節氣, jeolgi) rather than strictly lunar months. There are 24 solar terms per year, each marking a specific moment in the astronomical year. The month pillar of your Saju chart is determined by which solar term period you were born into, not the calendar month. This means the cutover from one Saju month to another happens mid-month by Gregorian standards, and the exact date shifts by one to two days each year.
If you were born within a few days of a solar term boundary, getting this step wrong can change your month pillar entirely, and shift several elemental interactions throughout your chart.
Step 3: Apply the Sexagenary Cycle to the Day
The Heavenly Stems cycle through 10 characters, repeating every 10 days. The Earthly Branches cycle through 12 characters, repeating every 12 days. Together, they create a 60-day cycle (the Sexagenary Cycle, or 육십갑자 in Korean) that never repeats within a single cycle. Think of it as two overlapping wheels: one with 10 positions, one with 12. Your birth date lands on one specific position in that combined wheel. That position is your Day Pillar.
Tracing your birth date through this cycle requires working from a historical reference point and counting forward. Historically, scholars memorised this or used printed almanacs. Today, a good calculator does it in milliseconds.
Does Birth Time Matter for the Day Master?
No. The Day Master is derived from the Day Pillar stem alone, and the day does not change based on the hour. Birth time affects only the Hour Pillar of your chart, the fourth and final pillar. For the Day Master specifically, only your birth date matters.
However, birth time significantly affects the Hour Pillar character, which has its own elemental qualities that interact with your Day Master. For a complete four-pillar reading, birth time matters. For Day Master identification alone, it doesn't.
Birth time does not affect your Day Master, only the Hour Pillar. If you don't know your birth time, you can still accurately identify your Day Master.

What to Do with Your Day Master
Once you know your Day Master, you have a reference point for everything else in your chart. Here is what that looks like in practice.
If you are Yang Wood (甲), Metal years are periods of pressure. Metal controls Wood in the elemental cycle, so these years bring discipline, friction, and the need to adapt. Water years, on the other hand, feel supportive: Water nourishes Wood.
If you are Yin Water (癸), a Fire-heavy chart is a constant drain. Yin Water can be exhausted by too much Fire. A Metal-rich chart, by contrast, feels generative: Metal produces Water.
The same principle applies to your 10-year luck pillars and to the people around you. Once you know your Day Master, these patterns become readable.
